Elk are also called Wapiti, a Native American word that means "light-colored deer." A male elk is called a bull and its antlers may reach 4+feet (1.2 meters) above its head, so that the regal bull elk stands over 9 feet (2.7 meters) tall.

Large bull elk are incredibly strong, weighing  800-1,000 pounds and can sneak through the woods without breaking a twig or making a sound. 

Elk usually lose their antlers in March and they begin to grow them back almost immediately in preparation for the early fall breeding season. Antler growth on deer and elk are the fastest growing bone known to man.
